Dr. Giuseppe
Bocchi was born in Parma on Aug. 24th 1940.
In 1967 he graduated in Mechanical Engineering, Department of Engines,
at the University of Bologna with a degree thesis by the title “Project
of a naturally aspirated, four stroke race engine”. The thesis
was introduced by Professor Gino Morandi and was approved with a score
of 96/100.
In November 1967 Dr. Bocchi was hired by Lamborghini Automobili where
in about one year became Director of the Research Department.
In January 1970 he moved to the Research Department of Ferrari Automobili.
Here he developed a number of studies about calculation methods of structural
rigidity, vibrations (torsional vibrations on crankshafts and their
critical velocities, flexional vibrations of the same, mathematical
modeling of the dynamics of the wheel-shock absorber ensemble, advanced
engine distribution systems). In January 1972 he moved to Pederzani
Automobili Racing Team where he conceived and designed the Tecno “boxer”
12 cylinder F1 engine that raced under the Martini & Rossi sponsorship
in the 1973 and 1974 F1 seasons. In May 1974 he was been entrusted the
most prestigious position of Chief Project and R&D Engineer at world
renown MV Agusta, the dominant make in motorcycle racing with none less
than 37 World Titles. In his new position he designed and brought to
world dominance the latest edition of the four cylinder St. 76/50 and
St. 76/35 racers lead to World Title supremacy by Giacomo Agostini and
Phil Read.
In addition to the complete re-design and radical upgrading of the MV
racing 350 and 500cc
in line fours, Dr. Bocchi designed a radically innovative, longitudinally
oriented 500cc boxer four, code named St. 91/50, due to replace the
units of the previous generation. This outstanding project was aborted
due to the sudden decision of MV Agusta parent company EFIM to withdraw
from all racing activities. This sudden decision induced a radical evolution
in Dr. Bocchi’s professional activity in that in 1980 he gave
life to his own design and research Center: B.R.D.
In 1987 Dr. Bocchi wrote and edited his “Motori a Quattro Tempi”
book in which he transferred all his most exclusive experience as design
and project engineer. Published by Hoepli Publishing Co., the
book has been met with great interest throughout the engineering community
around the world and has sold many thousand copies.
Throughout his professional activity, Dr. Bocchi has produced a large
number of extremely advanced engineering papers published by technical
publications, both Italian and International.
In the years 1988 and 1989 Dr. Bocchi held the courses of Mechanical
and Engine Construction at the University of Parma, where in the years
2000 and 2001 was charged again of the courses of Mechanical and Engine
Design. Since then he has been charged of a number of special courses
by the same University, making the academic activity a meaningful component
of his professional activity.
